Overview
According to George Stimpson's 1948 book, "Information Roundup," the tradition of giving your spouse an anniversary gift dates back to medieval Europe in what is today known as Germany. During that time, it was tradition to give your spouse a silver garland when you had been married for 25 years. References to gifts other than silver and gold anniversaries began in 1875. In 1937, the American National Jewelry Association drafted a list that included one symbol each year until the 15th anniversary and then one for every fifth year thereafter, according to Cookie Lee's book, "Wedding Anniversaries: From Paper to Diamond."
First Anniversary
The first anniversary, traditionally, is represented by paper anniversary gifts. If you have children, have them draw something special on a piece of paper. Other ideas include gift cards, journals, diaries and books.

Third Anniversary
The third anniversary carries a theme of leather, making it a fairly easy one to buy for. For your husband, buy a nice leather wallet or a keychain with a leather key fob. For your wife, purchase a wallet or a leather handbag. Appropriate for either sex: a leather-bound notebook or journal for work or home use.
Fifth Anniversary
For your fifth anniversary, traditionally, you should give a gift made of wood. Accomplish this task by purchasing a wooden picture frame, especially one that can be carved with a special message or a date to make it personal. For those who love to cook and grill, buy a cutting board. RedEnvelope offers one made from solid sugar maple and the option to personalize it with a carving in the center.

Seventh Anniversary
The seventh anniversary is marked by a gift of wool or copper. Purchase your spouse a wool scarf, a pair of wool slippers or a warm pull over. If copper is more your speed and your spouse is into history, purchase a set of old-fashioned copper coins as a keepsake item.
Tenth Anniversary
Aluminum and tin are the materials to buy for the tenth wedding anniversary. Luckily, many digital items such as cameras and digital photo frames are made from aluminum, making it easy to fulfill tradition and buy something new and useful at the same time. RedEnvelope also offers aluminum monogrammed golf club links, perfect for the golfer in the family. Simply have them personalized, and he can slip them over the logo on his golf clubs.
