How to Care for Cultured Pearls

Contributing WriterJan. 14, 2010

Overview

Cultured pearls are produced by human interference in the natural processes of mollusks. After this initial human intervention, the pearls develop in the same manner as they would normally develop in nature. Pearls are relatively soft and are damaged easily by many things: acids, sweat, perfumes, hairspray, liquid dish soap, scouring pads, brushes and even other loose jewelry that is stored in contact with them. They are softer than most other gemstones, and should be stored away from other pieces.

Clean after Wearing

Wipe your pearls down with a soft cloth after you wear them. The cloth can either be damp (not wet) or dry. Do this even if the pearls seem completely clean to the naked eye. You may not be able to see any perspiration or other substances on the surface of the pearls, but even traces of those substances can harm the pearl over time.

Wipe with Clean Cloth

Dampen a cloth with olive oil and wipe the pearls to restore their luster. Use a fresh cloth to wipe off any excess oil. Be careful not to get olive oil on the string holding pearls together.

Use Professional Cleaning Solution, if needed

Use a special pearl cleaning solution on your pearls if they are in need of heavy duty cleaning. This solution won't harm the pearls. Alternatively, take them to a jeweler to have them cleaned professionally.

Clean with Warm Water and Soft Cloth

Rinse off dirt and debris immediately. Use warm water and a soft cloth to remove any dirt or debris that may have accumulated on your jewelryfrom daily wear. Dry it thoroughly using another clean, soft, dry cloth before storing.

Recommended Materials

  • Olive oil
  • Soft cloth
  • Pearl cleaning solution

Warnings

Remove pearl jewelry before doing common tasks such as cleaning or cooking. Be particularly careful to avoid acids like vinegar and lemon juice, which dissolve pearls. If you need to clean tarnish off of a sterling silver setting, don't use any type of immersion method. Use silver polish or a silver polishing cloth, and make sure the solution or cloth doesn't come in contact with the pearls.
